An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD — known in Spain as DAP) is a standardised document that sets out a product's environmental impacts across its life cycle. It is not an opinion or a "green product" certificate: it is quantified data, verified by an accredited third party and published in an official registry.
It is prepared following ISO 14025 (Type III declarations) and, for construction products, EN 15804. Other sectors have specific rules called PCRs (Product Category Rules), which define what to measure and how.
The result is a document with a registration number, the signature of an accredited verifier and 5-year validity. The same standard, recognised throughout Europe and in many international markets.
An EPD builds on the LCA. If you already have one done with Scala Vita, the process is faster. If not, we start from scratch.
We assess whether a previous LCA exists or needs to be carried out, and identify the programme operator and the PCR that applies to the product.
We carry out or adapt the LCA so it meets exactly the PCR requirements of the chosen programme operator (EPD International, IBU…).
We prepare the EPD in the standardised format: cover, product data, life cycle inventory, results by category and additional information.
An independent accredited verifier reviews conformity, data quality and accuracy. We handle all communication with them.
We register the EPD with the programme operator. It is published with a registration number, verification seal and 5-year validity.
The CPR and many European public tenders already require an EN 15804 EPD to be able to bid.
Large accounts ask their suppliers for EPDs as a purchasing criterion and for their own reporting.
