Ecodesign is the systematic integration of environmental criteria into product design and development. It is not a label or a campaign: it is a way of working that reduces impact at the source, rather than offsetting it afterwards.
ISO 14006:2020 defines how to integrate it into existing management systems. But the real push comes from regulation: the ESPR Regulation (2024/1781) requires manufacturers to meet specific requirements on durability, repairability, recyclability and carbon footprint, category by category.
Together with the CSRD, which requires environmental impact to be reported under the ESRS E1 (climate) and ESRS E5 (circular economy) standards, ecodesign stops being voluntary and becomes part of companies' legal obligations.
